The Environmental Protection Agency is responsible for approving pesticides that are sold. An EPA pesticide fact sheet dated November on sumithrin contains no information on the acute or chronic toxic effects when it is swallowed, absorbed through the skin or sprayed in the eye.

Nor is there any information on whether sumithrin causes birth defects, genetic damage, is poisonous to birds or how it behaves in soil or water. However, numerous independent studies of synthetic pyrethroids do not give these chemicals a clean bill of health.

Synthetic pyrethroids, a class of more than broad-spectrum insecticides, are the most commonly used chemicals for indoor pest control. A study by researchers at the Mt. Studies have also shown various synthetic pyrethroids can harm immune and reproductive systems. Many media reports, however, contain statements from doctors or other scientists that the spraying is safe—or at least much less of a risk than the West Nile Virus.

These reassuring statements hide a rather startling fact: Though pesticides have been widely used for more than 50 years, very few medical professionals are trained to diagnose either acute or chronic health problems from pesticide exposure.

In order to work, the insecticide must hit the mosquito directly, says Dr. David Pimentel, an insect ecologist at Cornell University. But since spray trucks are only fogging the street side of buildings, he doubts that more than one-tenth of 1 percent of the poison is actually hitting its target.

None of the dozens of stories reviewed for this piece mentioned there are much safer and more effective alternatives for dealing with adult mosquitoes. Is the spraying of Anvil harmful to my health or my family's health? Is Anvil an "endocrine disruptor"? Are some people more likely than others to experience symptoms after they have been in contact with Anvil spray?

If I'm pregnant, can the spraying affect this pregnancy or harm my baby? Should I be concerned about cancer because of the spraying program?

Should I be concerned about coming into contact with pesticides on surfaces after spraying e. Limited studies on other chemicals suggest the amount of pesticide transferred to skin decreases with more time after spraying and very little transfers 24 hours after spraying ; is less on dry skin compared to wet skin; and is less from porous surfaces compared to non-porous ones. What can I do to reduce exposure to Anvil? Children and pregnant women should take care to avoid exposure when practical. If possible, remain inside or avoid the area whenever spraying takes place and for about 30 minutes after spraying. That time period will greatly reduce the likelihood of your breathing pesticide in air. Close windows and doors and turn off window air-conditioning units or close their vents to circulate indoor air before spraying begins.

Windows and air-conditioner vents can be reopened about 30 minutes after spraying. If you come in direct contact with Anvil spray, protect your eyes. If you get Anvil spray in your eyes, immediately rinse them with water.

Wash exposed skin. Wash clothes that come in direct contact with spray separately from other laundry. Consult your health care provider if you think you are experiencing health effects from spraying. If spraying just occurred, minimize your contact with surfaces and wash skin that has come in contact with these surfaces.
